The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced the opening of new congestion relief lanes on I-4, providing much-needed improvements to one of Central Florida’s busiest highways. The newly added lanes are designed to enhance traffic flow, reduce travel times, and improve safety for commuters throughout the I-4 corridor.

On Monday, two newly inaugurated “congestion relief” lanes were opened, extending 6.1 miles in both directions along I-4, from the east of U.S. 27 in Polk County to World Drive near Disney Springs. This strategic enhancement is poised to substantially increase the interstate’s capacity, facilitating more efficient commutes for over 200,000 motorists each day.

Last week, select segments of the newly expanded lanes became operational, offering drivers a more efficient travel experience in advance of the comprehensive I-4 renovation, which remains several years from completion. This particular portion of the highway now boasts four lanes in each direction, an increase from the previous three. These additional lanes are accessible to all motorists, irrespective of toll payments.

The I-4 congestion relief lanes are expected to significantly improve the state of Central Florida’s transportation network, making it easier for residents to commute, businesses to thrive, and visitors to explore the many attractions the region has to offer.
